Shumon Basar studied architecture at Cambridge University and the Architectural Association. Worked for Zaha Hadid (1996-99). Co-director of curatorial/design group Newbetter, an editor at fashion/culture quarterly Tank and co-founder of sexymachinery. Since 2006, is director of Curatorial Practices and Cultural Projects at the Architectural Association, London, where he also co-directs the Summer Architecture School. Has also lectured at the Royal College of Art and London Consortium. Basar has written for Modern Painters, ArtReview, Blueprint, Sunday Telegraph and Domus, Edited books include Did Someone Say Participate: An Atlas of Spatial Practice, MIT/Revolver, 2006 (with Markus Miessen); With/Without, Moutamarat/Bidoun, 2007 (with A. Carver and Miessen); Cities from Zero, AA Publications,2007; and The World of Madelon Vriesendorp, AA Publications, 2008 (with S. Trueby) which is in association with the exhibition on the Dutch artist and co-founder of OMA. Basar has recently been appointed Curator for a private client who plans to establish a collection, foundation and London gallery dedicated to the culture, history and future of architecture.
